VW Polo gets new 1.0 L petrol engine in India – Price Rs 5.47 lakh

Volkswagen India has introduced the 1.0 L MPI engine for Polo across 4 trims. The new engine addresses customer preference for fuel efficient cars. The fuel efficient parameter passes with flying colours with the new engine having fuel economy of 18.78 kmpl as per ARAI. Compared with the 1.2 L engine’s fuel efficiency listed at 16.47 kmpl, the new for India smaller engine is more efficient.

1.0 L MPI engine specs – Naturally-aspirated, 999cc three-cylinder engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission (MT), and returns max power of 76 hp (56 kW) at 6,200 rpm, and max torque of 95 Nm at 3,000-4,300rpm.

The 1.2-litre engine in comparison, which continues to be in service for now, returns power of 75 hp at 5,400 rpm, and torque of 110 Nm at 3,750 rpm. The smaller engine appears to offer similar power output, though a tad bit less torquey. What will need to be reviewed is the responsiveness of the smaller new engine. The new engine brings in 18 kgs weight reduction.

Steffen Knapp, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India said, “Delivering on our promise of continued product introduction and innovation, we are pleased to introduce the Polo in an all-new 1.0 L MPI engine. We are known for our performance and unmatched safety and with this new introduction; we further enhance our brand proposition, providing a diverse portfolio to India’s distinctive car-buyer, with multiple engine options that best suits their requirements.”

Volkswagen India will replace the 1.2 L MPI engine across its lineup with the new 1.0 L MPI engine in time. That suggests the Ameo compact sedan will soon be announced with an engine change. The engine swap doesn’t alter price listing and Polo Trendline is on offer at a price of Rs 5,41,800 (ex-showroom).

The 1.2l petrol is on offer with Allstar and GT TSI variant for now.
